Chapter Five

Anastasia arrived home an hour later. I was sitting in the living room with my laptop, working on an enhancement to our system. She hung up her outerwear and stood looking at me.

"Are you angry with me?"

I looked up. "No, of course not."

"Are you just being polite?"

"No, Anastasia, I am not just being polite. I am not angry with anyone."

She watched me for a while, her cop eyes searching me carefully. I could easily have lied to her about this, but I wasn't. She sat down in a chair across from me. "All right. That was a dangerous conversation. Do I need to say 'I told you so'?"

"Are you angry with me for asking?"

"No."

"You understand I will respectfully decline any further invitations, and I presume that is also the end of my snowmobiling with you."

"My parents are good people," she said.

"Are you going to defend their position to me? Do you find me disgusting, too?"

"Of course not!" she said hotly. "But you don't have to make such a big deal about this."

"Fine," I said, annoyed. "Forget I said anything. I'm tired. I'm going to bed."

I started to get up, but she beat me to it and stood in front of me. "Please don't be like this."

"Like what?" I asked.

"Please don't shut me out. Please don't go to bed angry with me."

"Your mother is a closed-minded, ignorant bigot who finds me disgusting, and you tell me I shouldn't make a big deal about it? What do you want from me, Anastasia?"

She stepped closer, and I looked up into her eyes, wondering what she wanted.

"There's something I've wanted since the day we met," she said.

"What? To let me have it for being a judgmental bitch?"

"No." She took my computer out of my hands and set it on the coffee table. Then she looking into my eyes again, watching me. She decided something, because she said, "Hold out your hands."

"What?"

"Just hold them out, Jennifer."

Puzzled, I held my hands out in front of her, palms down. Anastasia reached into her back pocket then said, "I understand how you feel. I know how much it hurts to hide."

I looked back into her eyes, and I didn't see when her hands reached for my wrists, and so I was slow to react when cold steel pressed against my skin, and she locked her handcuffs over my wrists. She squeezed them closed, then held my hands.

I looked down at my cuffed wrists then up into her face, confused, but my heart began pounding and my mouth felt dry.

"Anastasia?"

She tugged on my wrists, pulling me close, then wrapped her arms around me, one hand reaching into the hair at the back of my head. She used her control to lift my face towards her, and then her lips were over mine.

I was so surprised; I was slow to react. She took my mouth, her hunger obvious, and then I was kissing her back, pressing more firmly against her. She held me tight to her, and when her tongue caressed my lips, I parted for her, my tongue reaching to meet hers.
